Oh its been a while since I blogged. A really long while. One of the things that inspired me to blog now is that I just started a Christian ladies group where we come together to pray, discuss the word of God and help ourselves to become women whose lives reflect the very nature of God in everything we do. So one of our first deliberations was on having a relationship with God, so I thought I might as well share some of the insights that the Holy Spirit ministered to me.
So here are a few points I’d like to share with you all regarding building a relationship with God and the importance.
In establishing a relationship with God, it is important to have an understanding that God firstly desires this relationship with us. He expresses His desire to commune with us through the sacrifice of Jesus, His Son. You have to ‘know’ that God loves you and He loved you before you ever loved Him. The Bible says
“This is real love- not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins” 1 John 4:10
Secondly, we have to know that we are His children and He is our Father. That means we can then confidently come to Him. This happens after we have accepted His love through the sacrifice of His Son on the cross. Now we can call Him Father. The Bible severally refers to us as His offspring, giving us the confidence that there already exists a relationship by accepting Christ. We just have to sustain it, just like any other relationship.
“Therefore since we are God’s offspring, we should not think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone—an image made by human design and skill”. Acts 17:29
Also, remember when the disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray, it wasn’t that they hadn’t been praying before but they had noticed something different about the way Jesus communicated with God. The first thing Jesus told them was “Our Father”. That speaks of RELATIONSHIP, which was different to what they had known God as.
The Jews back then knew God as Jehovah, which also meant Lord but they had not really experienced God as their Father. I think that has also hindered how people ‘relate’ with God today. How do we see God? Is he your Father? The story of the prodigal son is also deliberate in using the terms Father and Son. All these points to the fact that God desires a close relationship with us beyond the religious mind-set we may have acquired over time.
More so, the bible says, “draw near to me and I’ll draw near to you” James 4:8.
Which means the growth of the relationship is not dependent on just us. When we make a move, God also makes a move, which further bridges the gap that existed as a result of the fall. So the question becomes how do I draw near?
Well, one of the ways to foster great relationship is communication. Constant communication. The act of communicating with God is what we know as Prayer. Now, there is a way to pray. The bible says that you ask but you do not receive because you ask “wrongly”. Meaning your way of communicating could be wrong. Jesus told us how to communicate right, through the Lords Prayer.
However, the Lord’s Prayer as we know it isn’t literal. Every time Jesus spoke to His disciples, it was either in parables or with deep connotations, it was hardly ever literal. It always had a deep spiritual meaning or an underlying principle attached. That’s why they could hardly ever get what He meant except the Spirit of God gave them understanding. The Lord’s Prayer is no exception. We could always discuss in detail the meaning of the Lord’s Prayer but for the sake of simplicity I’ll just say this… Jesus was giving a pattern and not exactly what should be prayed.
Thus, Praying to God is one of the ways to build a good relationship with Him. The dilemma people face with prayer is usually as result of what they think it is. Prayer isn’t meant for demanding alone or casting and binding alone. It isn’t what you do only in morning during devotion or at night when you go to bed. It is primarily for fellowshipping with your father. So if the Bible says: (Continuing steadfastly in prayer – Romans 12:12 ; With all perseverance. – Ephesians 6:18 ; Continue Earnestly – Colossians 4:2 ; Pray without ceasing – 1Thessalonians 5:17) Then prayer can’t be only what we do only in the morning and maybe also in the night plus we can’t cast and bind all day. So how do we obey these clear injunctions above? What does it mean to pray ceaselessly?
It means to be in a state where the flesh is stilled and the noise of the world is silenced. It means to make the Lord your dwelling place. . It means to be in a constant state of worship; where you let God know it is all about Him. It also means to get to a place where your primary objective is letting the will of God flow in the earth through you.
Prayer doesn’t mean to always verbally talk to God. Praying without ceasing is to have our hearts constantly connected to God. If you are connected to God, you will know His will and also do them. Prayer is our spiritual breath and it keeps us connected to God. More so, if we don’t stay connected to our source, we die (spiritual death). Imagine a Fish that is no longer in water; it can’t live because it is no longer connected to its source of life. Same thing applies to us.
In addition, our actions communicate something to God. It’s not only until will start to talk to God with our words that we build relationship. The bible says if you love God you’ll obey His commandments. So obedience to God is an expression of our love to God and relationship with Him.
For example, are you obedient to Gods word? When you go to work or school, do people see your behaviour and because of that revere/honour your father? Does God give you an assignment and you carry it out completely and accurately …like in the case of Noah. Do our actions show that we are connected to God or have a relationship with Him?
Just like any other strong relationship, trust has to exist. Can God trust you? Look at the life of Job. God actually boasted of Job to the devil because He trusted Job. That speaks volumes of the relationship that they had. We should strive to get to that point where God can trust us that much because of the relationship we’ve built with Him not by words alone but through our actions.
Furthermore, communication is not a one way street so we can be sure that God responds to us when we talk to Him. Like I said we talk to God beyond our words but also through actions. For example, fasting also communicates to God where your heart is and it causes God to reveal Himself even more to you.
“But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face so that you do not appear to men to be fasting but to your father who is in the secret place; and your father who sees in secret will reward you openly” Matthew 6: 17-18
This scripture still talks about ‘Father’ and also lets us know that Gods reward for our actions (eg fast) is also part of His communication to us.
Another way He communicates with us is through the written word. The Bible! We need to make a habit of studying Gods word not because it is a religious obligation but because you desire to know God more and THE WORD IS GOD! If you want to hear God, open your Bible and God will speak to you through the Holy Spirit.
“Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful“. Joshua 1:8
The highest level of prosperity is building a strong relationship with God. Trust me our relationship with God isn’t time based, it is eternal. There’s nothing more exciting.
“Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.” 2 Timothy 16-17
God uses His word to communicate to us His children what we need in order to do what He wants us to do in the earth. He uses His word to teach us and guide us. So if you want a relationship with God, you can’t neglect His word.
These things are only possible through the help of the Holy Spirit.
“ So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace. For the sinful nature is always hostile to God. It never did obey God’s laws, and it never will. That’s why those who are still under the control of their sinful nature can never please God. But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you. (And remember that those who do not have the Spirit of Christ living in them do not belong to him at all.) Romans 8:6-9
If you desire to be on this path, you just pray to your father and He will answer you, ask the Holy Spirit to lead you.
One quick advice, one thing you can’t do is keep a company of close friends that aren’t on this path, it’s one of the quickest ways to set yourself back… The righteous should choose his friends carefully, for the wicked leads them astray. Proverbs 12:26
“Therefore Come out from among them And be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, And I will receive you. I will be a Father to you, And you shall be My sons and daughters, Says the Lord Almighty”. – 2 Corinthians 6:17-18
This is not all there is to know about building a relationship with God but they are very vital things to consider when you want to build a better relationship with God and its definitely a good place to start.
God Bless you and strengthen you as you walk in this path. Amen!
